Elisabeth Hospital Essen

The Elisabeth Hospital – Essen’s first and thus oldest hospital – is located in the Huttrop district of Essen and today stands for the bundling of medical-technical know-how and for a modern infrastructure. In the Elisabeth Hospital with its 613 beds, around 26,000 patients are treated annually in five specialized intensive care units, one interdisciplinary intermediate care unit and 22 normal wards. In addition, about 36,000 patients are treated in the interdisciplinary central emergency department and the hospital’s special outpatient clinics, and about 2,000 children are born here every year. This makes it the second largest hospital in the city after Essen University Hospital. It is an academic teaching hospital of the university. In-patient and out-patient medical treatment is provided here at the highest level by the most internationally renowned specialists. Patient care as well as the culture of cooperation has been based on Christian principles at the Elisabeth Hospital Essen for over 175 years. Since 2006 the Contilia GmbH is the responsible body, 66 percent of which is held by the St. Elisabeth Foundation Essen, 33 percent by the St. Marien Hospital Foundation Mülheim and one percent by the Caritas Trägerwerk in the diocese of Essen.
