Philharmonic Hall Essen
At the edge of Essen’s city garden, the historic Essener Saalbau is a concert hall, which is now called the Essen Philharmonic Hall. The Philharmonic Hall Essen is not only one of the most beautiful but also acoustically one of the best concert halls in Germany. Listening to a concert in the Philharmonic Hall is something very special. You have the choice between classical and jazz, new and old music, symphonic concerts and chamber music. The building itself – the former Saalbau – has a varied history: in 1904 Richard Strauss conducted the opening concert, two years later Gustav Mahler conducted the premiere of his 6th symphony here. In 1943 the Saalbau was destroyed in a bombing raid, after the Second World War the reconstruction was quickly completed. Even in the post-war period, the Saalbau was regarded as Essen’s “parlor”. But as time went by, the building was seen as in need of modernization: in 2004, the building was ceremonially reopened as the Essen Philharmonic Hall. The exterior of the building in Essen’s southern district, which is otherwise designed in the simple style of the post-war years, is characterized by a copper-clad mansard roof. The Alfried Krupp Hall with its excellent acoustics forms the heart of the building. It offers space for 1,906 visitors and can be used for a variety of purposes. The glass cube of the RWE Pavilion, with its 400 seats and unobstructed view of the Stadtgarten, is the ideal venue for jazz and children’s concerts, but also for receptions and celebrations. An attractive program with outstanding artists and ensembles contributes to the good reputation of the Philharmonic Hall Essen. In addition, the following play here
the Essen Philharmonic Hall for their symphony concerts. The building also serves as a multi-purpose event venue. The multifunctional rooms are suitable for conferences, congresses, fairs, balls and parties.
