West German Heart Center

The West German Heart and Vascular Center Essen (WHGZ) is a supra-regional center for maximum cardiovascular care with an academic profile and serves the research, diagnosis and therapy of diseases of both the heart and the vascular system. The spectrum of the Heart Center includes all areas of cardiovascular medicine, including all therapeutic options for coronary heart disease, cardiac arrhythmia, valvular heart disease, heart failure, aortic diseases, congenital heart defects, and emergency and intensive care medicine. The treatment of cardiovascular diseases has been a clinical focus at Essen University Hospital for many years. The WHGZ is unique in that it brings together not only the Clinics of Cardiology and Angiology, Neurology, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and the Departments of Pediatric Cardiology and Vascular Surgery, but also the scientific institutes for pathophysiology, pharmacology and mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases. The physical proximity of the clinics and institutes ensures optimal patient care due to the short distances and ideally coordinated workflows. This not only structures the diagnostic and therapeutic processes in the interest of the patient in a more future-oriented manner across clinics, but also enables innovations to be implemented more quickly for the benefit of the patient.
