Over the past decades, the city of Essen has developed from a mining town into an attractive tourist and cultural destination. Essen is popular for hotel guests but also because of its proximity to the surrounding Ruhr area cities and the Rhineland. The distance to Bochum or Dortmund is only about 20 and 40 km respectively. And even the distance to Düsseldorf and Cologne is not very long at about 35 or 70 km.
