The Grugahall

The Grugahall is a multifunctional event hall built in 1958 on the old foundations of an exhibition hall built in 1927 by the Krupp company in the Rüttenscheid district of Essen. It can accommodate up to 10,000 visitors and was declared a listed building on October 26, 2000. It was destroyed in the Second World War. The design for the “butterfly” made of steel and glass was created by the architectural partnership Ernst Friedrich Brockmann and Gerd Lichtenhahn. The steel roof construction spans an open area of 80 by 80 meters. The steel construction of the roof and the steel-glass façade are supported by a reinforced concrete substructure. In 1988 and 1995 the hall was modernized, since 2000 it is a listed building.
