The Grugahall is a multifunctional event hall built in 1958 on the old foundations of an exhibition hall built in 1927 by the Krupp company in the Rüttenscheid district of Essen. It can accommodate up to 10,000 visitors and was declared a listed building on October 26, 2000. It was destroyed in the Second World War. The design for the “butterfly” made of steel and glass was created by the architectural partnership Ernst Friedrich Brockmann and Gerd Lichtenhahn. The steel roof construction spans an open area of 80 by 80 meters. The steel construction of the roof and the steel-glass façade are supported by a reinforced concrete substructure. In 1988 and 1995 the hall was modernized, since 2000 it is a listed building.
The Grugahall is centrally located in Essen Rüttenscheid, in the direct vicinity of Messe Essen. It is part of the Gruga complex, which also includes the Grugapark, the Grugabath and Messe Essen. The abbreviation GRUGA stands for the Great Ruhrland Horticultural Exhibition, which took place in Essen in 1927 and 1952. The Grugahall rounds off the remarkable variety of events at the Essen location. For 60 years, the Grugahall has been a guarantee for top-class entertainment: visitors can look forward to a wide range of musical styles, experience comedy greats and get to know ever new event formats.
Bill Haley, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones performed here, politicians from Konrad Adenauer to Angela Merkel were guests and several major sporting competitions were held in the Grugahall. Everything is possible. As the center of the Rhine-Ruhr cultural landscape, the Grugahall presents jazz, pop and rock greats from all over the world. It is a show stage and concert hall for stars and orchestras, a sports venue for tennis, handball, gymnastics, boxing and soccer. It is a circus ring and ice palace. Whether federal party conferences, church congresses, general meetings or union days, under the butterfly’s listed roof, there is room for everything.
The entrance to the Grugahall is only 270 m away from the Hotel an der Gruga, so you can leave your car at our place to enjoy a relaxing evening.
