The Grugabath in Essen

The open air bath Grugabath open-air pool owes its existence to the planning for the 1965 Federal Horticultural Show and is part of the Grugapark like the famous Grugahalle. The city of Essen commissioned the well-known architect Gerd Lichtenhahn, who planned the modern bath. After three years of construction and

At a total cost of 19 million German marks, the open-air pool in the Grugapark opened its doors on June 17, 1964.

With its almost 58,000 square meters, it is the largest outdoor pool in Essen. For the people of Essen, the Grugabath is a second living room on hot days. Here you can
Families spend the whole day without getting bored for even a minute. What makes the open-air pool at the Gruga so special is the well-balanced mixture between the pools and the sunbathing areas.

The outdoor pool has four pools, which are very interestingly arranged. At the very top is a heated pool, which with its dimensions of 25 by 50 meters also
is suitable for regular competitions. Right next door is the 20 by 20 meter large and 4.50 meter deep pool, which is only for the jumpers. There is
the ten-meter tower, which is reminiscent of a winding tower in its construction, as is appropriate for the mining city of Essen. On the lower platform is the heart of the open-air pool in the Gruga: The 22 by 63 meters large and heated wave pool, which was one of the first wave pools in Germany. The non-swimmer’s pool, which is not heated, measures 25 by 80 meters. The showpiece of this pool is the elephant slide.

Guests can spread out their towels on the 25,000 square meters of lying surface. On an area of 1500 square meters there are play areas and
Playgrounds. Those who want to play beach volleyball can do so on two beach volleyball courts and for swimming competitions there is a grandstand which seats 700 spectators. The kiosk on the grounds of the outdoor pool is responsible for the physical well-being. From there, there is also a unique view of the underwater world of the higher situated jumping pool. Guests can watch through large glass panes how the jumpers dive into the water after their jump from the ten-meter board.

This beautiful outdoor pool is only 5 minutes away from the Hotel An der Gruga by bike, which we are happy to provide free of charge. How would it be, before a
Meeting or business appointment to swim a few laps in the morning or relax on one of the beautiful sunbathing lawns in the afternoon?
